Change to the inspection requirements for mobile elevating work platforms

With Law No. 34 of 12 March 2026, Annex VII of Legislative Decree 81/2008 was amended.

The changes entered into force on 7 April 2026 and concern, among other things, fruit-picking platforms (“carro raccoglifrutta”).

Significant Change

As of 07.04.2026, a three-year inspection interval applies to:

  • mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs for persons)
  • off-road work platforms for orchard operations (fruit-picking platforms)

In the future, mobile elevating work platforms will be divided into the following categories:

  • Fruit-picking platforms (“carri raccoglifrutta”) (new) - Inspection interval: Every 3 years
  • Mobile elevating work platforms (for persons) according to EN 280 (new) - Inspection interval: Every 3 years
  • Mobile elevating work platforms (for persons) without EN 280 - Inspection interval: Annually

The new inspection interval (every 3 years) applies exclusively if the mobile elevating work platform is registered with INAIL as a “carro raccoglifrutta” (fruit-picking platform) or if it can be demonstrated that it was designed in accordance with EN 280.

For all other mobile elevating work platforms, the original inspection interval (annual) remains unchanged.
